Welcome to the Railroad Safety Toolkit for Bikes and Pedestrians.

The Railroad Safety Toolkit for Bikes and Pedestrians was created in December 2025 to provide interventions to support railroad safety specific to non-motorized vehicles. This toolkit is intended to supplement the existing FRA Grade Crossing Toolkit with 22 additional bike and pedestrian safety tools.

This toolkit identifies effective safety design, strategies, and interventions for railroad employees, researchers, communities, and organizations to review options that can help improve railroad safety.

Choosing the best option may be challenging. This toolkit summarizes each potential option, providing an overview of effectiveness, use cases, and considerations, based on research and experience.

Using the toolkit is simple. You can filter out tools by searching for keywords, additionally filtering by user type, intervention strategy, or intervention type. The intervention strategy consists of four broad categories (Assessment, Behaviour, Control, Design) that groups tools by their primary approach. The Intervention Type provides a more specific descriptor for each tool.
